SILVER COMET TRAIL CLOSED SECTION REOPENS

The section of the Silver Comet Trail, at mile 14.66 to 15.3, that was closed last Fall due to flooding, has been reopened – with restrictions.   Repairs have not been completed, but the section is open to walkers and cyclists who restrict their speed to 10 mph or less. There is orange barrier fencing along the trail where cyclists should slow down and everyone should stay on the paved trail.  The Paulding County Sheriff’s office will issue tickets to people that exceed the 10 mph limit.

Cost of Repairs to Flood-Damaged Section of Silver Comet Trail

County Administrator Mike Jones, reported the following as part of a mid-year budget review to County Commissioners on January 26, 2010

Flood repair that has closed part of the Silver Comet Trail will cost about $2.5 million, with the county responsible for 15 percent to 20 percent, “about $450,000 to $475,000 out of pocket.” Jones said Sen. Johnny Isakson “is working to close that gap, if not eliminate it” with another round of funds available to the local congressional delegation.

Jones said the trail is a popular recreational activity for residents of Paulding and from Cobb, Douglas and Polk counties as well. “I don’t know when a decision will be reached on the trail. We’re working diligently to get it reopened, but it’s a very expensive repair.”

Feb 9, 2010 The Rockmart Journal reported that Joe Anderson of GRITS (Georgia Rails Into Trails) made a proposal at the January Polk Board of Commissioners to create a partnership between GRITS and the County and share maintenance of the Silver Comet Trail in Polk County.  Up to now, maintenance has been done by volunteers from GRITS.
